After the nightmare conditions of 2006, 2007 was an absolute delight. The morning dawned cold, but with a beautiful clear sky.
There was a bit of head-wind, so times were not particularly fast, but joy it was in that dawn to be on skis. 39 Marathonistas started, and 33 finished. Of the rest, most were stopped for being too slow getting to St Moritz - a great shame as the day was so gorgeous, it seems a pity they were not allowed at least to continue to Pontresina, Samedan or even a bit further before being scooped up by the broom wagon. We did, unfortunately, have our first fairly serious injury: Louise Foden-Pattinson tripped over her skis fairly early in the race and hurt her ankle. It was only 15 km later, in the Statzerwald section, that she decided she was in too much pain to cope with the downhill section. The diagnosis - broken ankle, needing three pins. Her daughter Emma bravely completed the race on her own. Louise ended up being treated in the famous Gut Klinik, where all the casualties of the Cresta run end up. She spent a few unscheduled days in St Moritz. A few months later she seemed to be making a great recovery and was swearing to come back and complete the course. Amazing spirit, and we all hope she is back in future years. So far 129 Marathonistas have completed the race 215 times between them. Only around 10 have failed to complete the race, and only two because of injury on the day. Two people have done all the training but then decided not to start, both of them guys who were worried their wives would prove faster than them on the day! | ||||
